Downtown

gretchendrewphotography.com

Driving through a city
In some downtown at twilight
My heart is quiet and
Thoughts skip like rocks
I feel like I am somewhere else
With mountains in the clouds
Hipster on the corner plays guitar
His girlfriend dances beside him
Long blonde hair twisting and twirling
Spinning, eyes closed, freckled skin
Flat-brimmed hat held upside down
Outstretched, silently asking for thanks
I toss in spare dollars
Wadded in my purse
Along with a ring pop
Left over from the last visit
With my granddaughter
The beautiful music
And absolute coolness of it all
There on the street corner in the middle
Of passing cars, people on their way
To dinner or jobs or drinks with friends
Makes me feel like flowers bloom
In my hair, like I am thin and young
And rich in ways that money cannot buy
Hipster and his girl smile warmly
Hands never leave the guitar
She opens the ring pop
Slips it on her thumb
Green eyes following me away

  1. Kristi, This has such a beautiful rhythm and wonderful flowing style with no periods to interrupt the stream. I love it. It is a song.

    1. Bill, thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I love writing poetry like this. I wish I was musically inclined, so I could write songs. But alas, I only have a great appreciation for music and that's it.
